Van-campers – a practical and economical RV alternative

What are van-campers?

Van-campers are classed as a Class B motorhome, and is essentially a converted cargo carrying panel type truck or van type vehicle. This customization includes basic functional dining and bathroom facilities as well as sleeping.

My first RV was effectively one of these and there are many manufacturers who have developed and marketed some very clever designs.

Perhaps the first van campers were the VW combi-vans that so many used to chase the surf or just escape on the road with and the VW combi-van still makes a great base for a van-camper.

They are very a good option for those downsizing or wanting a vehicle that is versatile and can be used as a primary touring vehicle.

They are by far the most fuel efficient and maneuverable of all RV. While some see them a little limited as long term serious touring vehicles when compared with snowbirder vehicles I know people who have driven around the vast Australian outback for 2 years, it is about getting the right combination for your needs

Most van-campers now include RV park AC power systems, fresh water storage, town water hook up and invariably a pop-top to give greater headroom, along with stowaway awnings

How large is a van-camper?

Size is effectively limited to the van size and the overall internal sizes, and they range from around 16 to 22 feet and cater for 4 people. Manufacturers often lower floors, push out the sidewalls as well as increase headroom using molded panels which expands space considerably.

Many choose to also add on a camping tent-trailer which expands the options considerably. The easy towing capability also includes recreational toys such as the boat, motorcycle trailer or other trailer. In general they are compact and tend on the cramped side but they do offer a lot to consider.

Some of the US manufacturers include Chinook RV, Coach House, Great West Vans, Isata Camper Vans, Leisure Vans, Pleasure Way, Roadtrek Vans, Sportsmobile Van Camper, VW - Eurovan, Winnebago-Rialta and Xplorer Motor Home
