Hiking-Sweden – A hiking paradise
There are many wonderful hiking options in this large and uncrowded country. In 1909 Sweden was the first European country to introduce laws for the protection of natural assets and they created 9 National Parks. These range from the Northern Lapland Arctic Circle down to Gotland Island, and now there are some 28 National Parks.
In addition there are 2500 nature reserves and more than 1000 wildlife sanctuaries. Three National Parks, Padjelanta, Sarek and Stora Sjöfallet Park, lie in region between Staloluokta and Ritsem in the west and Saltoluokta and Kvikkjokk in the east. "Laponia" is also listed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO. Hiking-Sweden – A hiking paradise
Stenshuvud National Park
This lies in the North and Stenshuvud is a hill of 97 metres altitude overlooking the Baltic Sea and located right next to a magnificent coastline. The marked trails take you through a rich flora and fauna habitat in the southern areas of the park. The park is largely covered by deciduous forest with heaths, swamps and meadows. Dalby Söderskog National Park
This is amongst the smallest of the Swedish National Parks and is near the city of Lund. It comprises mainly deciduous forest and has a very diverse birdlife. Hiking-Sweden – A hiking paradise
Söderåsen National Park
This is a relatively new National Park, some 30 km to the east of Helsingborg and has many marked hiking trails. The highest point is the Kopparhatten hill with an altitude of 212 metres which gives a great view. Store Mosse National Park

Blå Jungfrun National Park

This park comprises an ancient coniferous forest in the Småland highlands with many pine trees exceeding 300 years age.
Gotska Sandön National Park
This is an island and is part of the Province of Gotland. It comprises long and deserted sand beaches and sand .
Djurö National Park
This is a rather isolated archipelago of some 30 uninhabited islands lying in Lake Vänern, which is Sweden's biggest lake. The islands can only be accessed by boat and a major feature are the rich birdlife of privately-owned or rented boats. Djurö's wildlife highlights are its bird population of ospreys, hobby, oyster catchers and greater black-backed gulls along with herds of fallow deer. Tresticklan National Park
Located in northwestern region of Dalsland near the Norwegian border, the park preserves some of the last natural forest remaining in southern Scandinavia. The sparse and barren pine forest also comprises lakes and spectacular gorges and some interesting fauna that includes the capercaillie, the black grouse and the hazel grouse. Tiveden National Park

Tyresta National Park

Ängsö National Park

Färnebofjärden National Park

Fulufjället National Park
This park offers hikers a Scandinavian mountain landscape that also includes ancient forests. There are rocky canyons with the magnificent feature of the Njupeskär waterfall that has a height of 93 metres and a free fall of 70 metres.
Töfsingdalen National Park
This park is remote and relatively inaccessible wilderness of very rugged, barren land and virgin pine forest. The park can only be accessed by hiking 7 kilometers from the nearest road. Sarek National Park
Sarek has high peaks, glaciers and river rapids in a remote alpine terrain and has some 100 glaciers and over 200 peaks. Hikers must consider the rapidly changing weather, with snowstorms and avalanches being common. There is good animal life that includes bears, elks, wolverines and lynx. Padjelanta National Park
The largest park in Sweden rolling plains and large lakes. In summer you will hike past grazing reindeer in summer. Flora includes over 400 small plant species with animals that include reindeer, arctic foxes, wolverines and snowy owls.
Stora Sjöfallet National Park
This park has mountain areas that range from peaks and glaciers to dense virgin pine forests. The area has alpine peaks and glaciers in the Akka mountains, the Kierkau cliffs, the Ahutjukårså rock ravine, the picturesque Teusadalen valley, and the Vietas virgin pine forest.
Abisko National Park
This park area lies in northern Lapland and is one of the sunniest places in Sweden. The Park contains the national hiking trail, the Kungsleden or King's Way.
Hiking-Sweden – Arctic Hiking
If you go hiking in Arctic Sweden then you have reached probably hiking and backpacking paradise. The northern sections of Kungsleden or King's Way have comfortable huts sited around a day's walk apart. The good news also unlike many places is that you are able to pitch your tent virtually anywhere. Whether its by a little glacier up the side valley, or down by some lovely tundra pond, or beautiful rivers, there is no ranger waiting to write you up. True hiking freedom to do what you want here is wonderful. You don't need to buy a permit. It is also safe to drink water straight out of the creeks and rivers, as giardia is no problem.
Decisions on where to hike are hard. The Kungsleden starts at the railway station of Abisko, in the very far north of the Arctic Circle and ends at Hemavan, a small village 272 miles to the south. This hike along the whole length will take you a month or more. There are no villages along the trail, and you will encounter scattered camps of Lappish reindeer herders, along with log cabins where hikers can stay overnight. This route can be done in 4 week long sections.
The northern section has magnificent alpine landscapes and is the most frequented with the 6 day trail Abisko to Kebnekaise Fjällstation (79 km) which covers some 80 kilometers and the pick of the scenery along Kungsleden. From Kebnekaise the hiking trail leads to Nikkaluokta and you can take the bus from here to Kiruna. The Nordkalottleden has a length of some 800 km and traverses the north and passes through Norway, Sweden and Finland. Hiking-Sweden – A hiking paradise
