The primary criteria for any tent are how well it will shelter you and your group from the elements. This involves analyzing your particular camping plans and getting something to suit both budget and proposed activity. How big and for how many people? What type and shape, and will it be three season or four season, and what construction material? How much use is intended and how much is the budget? If it is an occasional activity without the rigors of hiking, then a relatively low cost tent may be the best decision. How big a camping-tent?

This is entirely based on how many people will use it and of course how large the people are, as headroom is important. You don’t want a tent that is like that used by mountaineers climbing Everest that you see on the Discovery Channel if you are tall casual vacationers. You should carefully consider how much ground space required between each person and factors such as access to enter and leave as you don’t want to be treading on people when you go to the “bathroom”. Of course if you prefer to be close that’s okay, and consider the ground space accordingly. This ground space consideration also must consider the sleeping equipment. If you are using a simple sleeping bag then the footprint will be small, however inflatable air mattresses and camping cots generally take up more room, so consider this when planning. What type of camping?

As I mentioned earlier car campers and occasional campers who take vacations in relatively good weather do not have the limitations of weight and size and a 3 season tent is quite suitable. About tent construction

Tent materials comprise waterproof Nylon and Polyester the latter being more resilient to weather and damage. Tent construction is important and good quality tents will be double stitched and entry zippers will be heavy duty. Corners and seams are also usually reinforced along with grommet backings. Most tents also some with a built-in floor that keeps out the bugs and other wildlife, and keeps people dry and warm. For those that go summer camping efficient ventilation is very important, both to carry away moisture from the inhabitants and also to prevent condensation when it turns cold overnight.

Tents have either top vents and also sidewall vents, which should have fine insect meshing. It is also a good idea to ensure our tent has what is called a rain fly. This is a protective cover that is located above the main tent roof, and this improves rain protection, and also sun protection which keeps it cooler.
