WHAT IS A CAMPING-TRAILER?
The trailer is essentially a towable box trailer that has sides that both expand and fold up with a tent type canopy and awnings. They are often called tents on wheels, with other names such as tent trailers, soft top, hard-top or fold-down. The sides are typically made of canvas or fiberglass, with a hard fiberglass roof that is raised when expanding the unit.
The trailer usually incorporates the beds within the main trailer body to give sleeping comfort. Typically they range from simple two-person units up to large 8-person units.
The overall sizes also vary with capacity, from around 15 to 23 feet when opened up. They remain one of the cheapest ways to RV, and prices range from $4,000 up to around $13,000, making them a very economical way to get into the RV and trailer lifestyle.

Camping-trailers are also towable by most vehicle types and power ratings, and as they fold up to a very compact and low profile size they do not have the same windage problems as other RV types and are relatively stable. While some have portable toilets you should plan on using camp ground showers and toilet amenities, so choosing your campsite is important for easy access. Many also have electric lighting both AC and DC and you simply plug into the campground power supply outlet.

LOOKING AFTER A CAMPING TRAILER?
Like all trailers you need to look after the various road parts. It goes without saying that tires should be in good condition and also that you have a spare, and I have lost count of the times I have seen trailers propped up on the side of the highway while the tow vehicle has gone off in search of a spare or repair. Also ensure that trailer towing hitch is in good condition. The electrical systems and rear lighting should be double checked before every trip to avoid being pulled over by the local "County Mountie" and getting a ticket.
