What are your favorite Campground-RV-Parks?

Choosing Your campground-RV-parks

Do your homework and research. Make sure you know what and where the campsites on your hiking trail are and whether they are open. There is no substitute for having a current year reference guide book.

Most campground-RV-parks are public or private. Public facilities are generally operated by Governmental agencies and the most common include national parks or state forests. In the USA this also includes Army Corps of engineers as well as Bureau of Land Management areas.

In most countries with National Park systems (and that is most these days) many quality areas are preserved with recreational areas or the general public set aside. In general the cost for camping are relatively modest with services now having to be self sufficient and User Pays principles in force to ease taxpayer funding burdens, which is quite reasonable. Most offer services on arrival and reservations are often hard to get, although many choose to take advantage of joining parks or national park organizations which offers subscription advantages.

In general amenities are basic but adequate and more popular destinations have quality restroom and showering facilities, as well as campfire and BBQ facilities. Tell us about your favorite public campground-RV-parks

Private campground-RV-parks facilities do not have consistency that governmental ones do, with wide disparity between quality and pricing. Where possible its best to go on good reviews or recommendations, and like most bad service you vote with your feet and never return. Many countries have basic camping spots with access to amenities, however private enterprise is about value adding and this means higher costs and they are more like resorts than camping grounds. Hiking and camping

When you collect your permit ask the ranger for the latest information. Be aware that in some very popular trails and camping spots you just might have to book when pay for your permit. Rangers are very helpful people so be polite and don’t get vocal and annoyed with them, listen to their options and suggestions.

When trails intersect or converge, or pass by some idyllic river or lake chances are that everyone wants to be there and these campsites will be full and even closed to rest the local environment. Don’t ignore the rules, and travel on to your next alternative location. Remember that peak camping season in popular locations leads to campground congestion. Check before you head out with the local ranger service that no advance reservations are required. If they do get the permit as early as possible so you wont be disappointed. This gives you greater choice and possible options if you want a range of ideas. As a reminder, don’t select a campsite that is outside your ability to reach with respect to the people in your group. To really enjoy the day and evening and be able to relax, plan your arrival at least 2 hours before twilight so you have enough time to get settled, organize dinner and then relax. There is nothing so stressful as racing against sundown to find a location to camp and get a tent up. Tell us about your favorite campground-RV-parks

Pick the right camping site

Choosing the right campsite is very important. Ideally choose a patch of ground that has already had previous campers and where the ground is already compacted and disturbed. In general the people before you have selected a shaded and protected area that is just right and with luck relatively close to water. Close proximity to water makes food preparation and washing easier. In addition the anglers among the group charged with catching dinner will appreciate the short walk. While going to sleep with the sound of water over stones is as soothing and peaceful as it gets, don’t camp too close or at water level. Campy at least 100 yards away and on higher ground. This will ensure that no flash flooding catches you unawares. Remember that a flash flood may originate quite some distance away and with storm activity that you didn’t see or hear and this can take time to travel down. An additional and worthwhile reason is that it allows animals to access without worry to drink, and gives you some great wildlife watching opportunities. Slow moving or still bodies of water such as lakes also have a higher bug activity so placing some distance is also advantageous. Tell us about your favorite campground-RV-parks

Where possible and depending on the number of other campers chose a site as far away as possible to ensure you that you all have privacy. Also don’t choose a site that ruins a great view for everyone. If you are going to camp for an extended period camp under shade as tents can become a little hot, also extended UV exposure can deteriorate the materials. Also consider wind protection when you choose a site. Being to exposed can be a bit of a shock when a weather front comes through during the night and nearly blows you off that wonderful spot with a view. Heavy forest or rock outcrops can provide an effective windbreak. If you are camping and hiking in the early spring or fall the nights can become rather cold so do not choose low spots where cold air will settle or water will pool when raining. Wherever you decide to camp don’t be intrusive or invasive, leave as few signs of your passing as possible and as little environmental impact as you can, preferably none. Another sun related issue is to choose somewhere that gets the morning or evening rays, especially in colder conditions

Sometimes you might be on a coastline and think about camping on the beach. If you do the ensure you are well clear of the tide line or any expected large wave action (not necessarily tsunami but large waves do happen). I recall camping on some remote islands in Northern Australia with some Aboriginal friends and decided that I would sleep at top of a fairly wide beach. They said no way, somewhere safer as the crocodiles might get me, I was skeptical that there were crocodiles out on these offshore islands however you don’t ignore local knowledge. In the morning they walked me down and there were 2 crocodile slides right up the beach, so I would have been breakfast. Tell us about your favorite campground-RV-parks stories
